J M Hotteterre le Romain, Trio Sonata Op. 3, No. 5 in C Major, for AA & bc, DOW 2501, £14.95

Concertante writing for the two recorders, both of which must negotiate equally demanding parts. The composer has abandoned the "French style" typical of the period and allows the piece to sound almost "Italian". Nevertheless, the guidelines that he set down for flautists in his other works (Principes de la flute, L'art de préluder, and the Suites Op. 2 and Op. 5) continue to apply.

J M Hotteterre le Romain, Suite Op. 5 No. 4 in D minor for treble recorder with bc, DOW 2513, £13.95

Hotteterre was one of the few composers of his age who wrote out models for the execution of every embellishment on the flute, thereby giving us an authentic glimpse into historical performance in the "French style." The sound is further rounded off by the use of a viola da gamba in the accompaniment.

Written in the Italian style and well suited to the sound of the recorder.

Noteworthy for its highly idiomatic writing for the recorder; the music seems to lie perfectly under the fingers.

B. Marcello, Sonata Op 2 No 5 for treble recorder with bc, DOW 2521, £13.95

Contains several challenging pieces. The music relies heavily on elements of improvisation, with only the most essential embellishments and phrase marks included. Players are invited to add trills, mordents, slurs and so forth at their own discretion. The same holds true, of course, for the realization of the figured bass (basso continuo or harpsichord).

A. Vivaldi, Concerto RV 108 in A minor for treble recorder and strings, DOW 2511, £13.95
